Master Cylinder Sight Glass Replacement

I finally got around to changing the sight glass on the clutch master-cylinder. I ordered two sight glass replacements from New River Cycle Salvage. It was quite an easy fix. The hardest part was getting the old OEM yellow glass out, without gouging the metal or popping out the metal washer. Once all the old material was out, I used brake cleaner, let it dry. Then a small bead of clear Permatex RTV. Use a piece of masking tape to hold in place and dry for 24 hours. Next day fill and bleed clutch and bingo, I can now see if the fluid is low. Here's a couple of photos, one of the brake cylinder with the old OEM yellow'd glass, and the clutch with the new glass installed.

I used them a couple of years back for mine as well. I did the brake. They had it to me in Jersey in 2 days no extra change. Real easy fix too. I just wish I did the clutch also, it's starting to look beat as well. Nice to have glass in there....

I used them also for my '86 Interstate - extremely easy to deal with, very fast shipping, very reasonable price! Beat the heck out of having to replace the whole master cylinder!

Good thing too, it was full of brown mud... bled the whole system until it was clean all the way through. I removed the MC entirely so I could work on it on the bench. Used JB Weld to glue the new glass in place. Man the old one was hard to get out. Reinstalled and bled at the MC banjo - took only about 2 squeezes to get the clutch solid. But them it took about 100 more to clean out the system and get clean fluid at the bottom... must have used about 1/2 litre of DOT 4. |
