Carb Sync
Hello. I was wondering if there is a post that anyone could lead me to that has a step by step procedure for syncing the carbs. I have a carbtune and have used it previously on my 1996 Yamaha Royal Star but need some help on " my new to me" 1985 GL1200I. Thanks

Follow the general synching instructions that came with the Carbtune tool for installation, method, rpm etc.
If you have a bike stand and can do this while seated on a chair, well it doesn't get much better....
Remove the lower fairing panels, both sides.
Remove the chrome trims above the carbs.
I like to remove the right side air bulkhead (black plastic) it takes a little kaniffling to wiggle it out.
The vacuum port screws are low on the intake runners just above the heads.
Synch the left side carbs to each other, synch screw located between the carbs.
Synch the right side carbs to each other, synch screw located between the carbs.
Synch the right carbs to the left, synch screw located aft of the right rear carb.

I go round the carbs as many times as necessary to achieve the absolute perfect synch...
And besides, you can pretend you are a Top Shelf MotoGP or Superbike Team Crew Chief while you are at it...gently blipping the throttle of the mighty boxer engine... Smile

This is one of the best about an hour of relaxed maintenance you can do to a GL1200 - it is pleasing when you crack on some throttle for the first time after a synch...

Thanks to the both of you. I am having a problem though. I can't seem to view pictures on many of the posts on the forum. Is there something I need to download? Thanks

Unfortunately, we had an issue with an old forum style we used here and in the changeover to this style, we lost many of the images that had been uploaded with posts.

I did the carb sync today. Thanks for the help. There was more to it than when I did my Royal Star because of all the removal of the plastic but once that was done it was much easier. I watched a video on YouTube that was very helpful. Bike is running smoothly and now I am hoping that the mileage goes up. Next project is the front brake and windshield.

it is amazing the difference in performance before and after a sync.
you should see a cooler running, more powerful gl1200
you will realize an improved mpg only AFTER you have satisfied your desire to play with your new found performance LOL

enjoy!
