timing poor boy
i bought a 1984 1200 goldwing last week, was not charging so i put a poor boy kit on it. when i started it up after install was knocking some on right side. thought i would take it down road just to see what was going on. noticed right off the bat lack of power. only went about a mile bike stopped running. just now tearing into it but this is what i got so far. took out plugs on right side (setting on seat)one was fine the one farther from radiator all messed up and the ones on the left side of bike fine. what do you think i tore up and will it be har to fix. have not got timing covers off yet. will do that tomorrow. any help would be great (i would say some how that side got out of time) this bike ran fine before i started.

I started another thread about sudden power loss. Snapped the right side timing belt. Casualty was a bent intake valve and cracked valve guide.

if you didn't replace the timing belts the motor should have not had a problem

now if you didn't connect the exciter wire to make the alternator work, the bike would be running on battery power only and finally ran low enough that fuel pump wouldn't work

you should have been seeing at least a 14.1-2 charge at 15-2000k

shouldn't have since you have belts on both sides,i would pull timing covers and check that before you spin motor over any more

Doesn't sound good, spark plug messed up, is it actually broken so a bit of it is inside the engine, timing and compression test will tell all, hope your lucky.

Spongebob as Earl said timing shouldnt have slipped but when i poorboyed mine and replaced the belts the right pully moved as expected. Moved it back and put the new belts on and the thing was TOTALLY out of time. Confusedhock: . Earl probably remembers this since we talked about it when it happened. I still have no idea how it happened since the pulley moving was expected and marked and returned to where it should have been but I wound up spending a good deal of time finding TDC again, and timing it from scratch.
Thank God I turned it by hand before I started it since valves were bumping pistons and it could have been big $-) to fix.
