dash lights replacement 1200 interstate
The illumination of my spedometer and tach is pretty dim as I believe there are some burned out bulbs. What kind of replacement bulbs are required and can they be had locally(CTC, Napa). They appear a bit pricey to order on line. At one time I believe there was a post that listed all of the required light bulbs on the bike but I cannot find the post. Thanks.

I forget the bulb size, but you can get them at Napa and most other autoparts stores.

Your bulbs will have a tiny blue 'condom' on them that you can remove and slip onto the new bulbs to change them into the same color. I thought they were specially tinted bulbs at first until the parts manager took a knife to scratch off a little of the 'paint' and found out it was instead just a tiny blue rubber cover on the bulb.

My problem is,...how do you get AT those bulbs?Isn't there a lot of removing of plastic, etc. just to get to them?

Yes a lot of it!

Best to have a manual on hand.

As I recall you start with removal of the radio, and the clock, then the speaker covers, the speakers, and then the plastic shroud. Now remove the mirrors, windshield garnish, and then the headlight, to access the mounting bolts behind the instrument panel.

I have taken the time to pull the dash apart to get at the dash illumination bulbs. Have taken windshield off, headlight out, disconnected spedometer cable and finally the two electrical plugs connected to the instrument panel. It was a bit of a battle to get the instrument panel to come out since there are two nuts accesible from the area behind the headlight and then two nuts visible from above once the windshield was removed. Getting those last forementioned nuts back on could be a challange.
Anyways, got the unit out abd pulled a couple of the dash illumination bulbs. They are sure tiny. Took one down to the local auto parts places, including napa but they could not match the bulb. Apparently the original is a 3 watt 12 volt and all they had were 1.5 watt 12 volt with the same base. Tried the sylvania website to see if I could find a part number to match the original bulb but their website tend to get hung up and I get nowhere. Tried calling and got nowhere(after hours).
The 1.5 watt 12 volt is the right size and the base is the same but it might be a little dim to do the job.
So, not sure if I should go with the 1.5 watt or search for the 3 watt. If anyone has a specific part number to help in the search that would help. The 1.5 watt has a C 37 number on it and it is a sylvania product.

I'm not sure if this is the right one but it is 3/12.

good luck.

I replaced my bulbs a few years back when I had to replace the speedometer cable.
It took me a little over an hour start to finish, got the bulbs at my local dealer...if I remember they were something like $10 for all of them.
Its not a hard job, just a little time consuming.
