valve clatter
My gl 1200 has 102 k on it and it is starting to have valve noise on the left side. Is there some kind of additive I can put in it to solve this problem?

Mine sounds like loose lifters in a car and the noise comes and goes. I'm thinking dirt or debris in the oil channels under the cam holder but I'm open to any and all opinions.

Mine comes and goes.. Is this common in a gold wing? Mine started doing this just as the bike went over 100k.

I've heard of this issue several times on GL1200 but I don't believe that it is a common.

My '84 (98,000 miles) developed a very loud ticking in the area of the LH head. I was near an oil change I drained 20 ounces of oil from the crankcase and added 20 ounces of MMO. In the 300 miles with this mix in the crankcase I heard the noise, faintly for about 5-10 seconds, twice. I changed the oil and filter, replaced the Valvoline 20W50 motorcycle oil with 10W40 Castrol 4T. The noise came back. I drained 6 ounces of oil from the crankcase and replaced it with 6 ounces of MMO. The noise is still there every now and then, but not as loud and not as long. Any known problems running minimal doses of MMO long term?

Thanks

I have had this to a couple of my 1200s. I have seen a lot of posts about this on the GWRRA message board in the past. The fix is to pull the rocker cover & rocker assembly. Then take the lash adjusters out 1 at a time & clean with solvent. There are 2 chambers where oil sets, remove the bolts that holds the covers on & clean out the chambers. Poorboys

Poorboy, did you disassemble the hydraulic valve adjusters to clean them or did you just soak them in a cleaning chemical.

Debris in the oil ports that feed the hydraulic valves.

I had one that would collapse due to an intermittent blockage and make a horrible loud noise. When we opened up the port it had a small very hard piece of debris in it that would obviously come up and block the port once in a while. No problems since though.

I had the same noise off and on. It was time to change the oil, first I put in a half a can of seafoam and ran it for 200 hundred mile ride. Changed the oil when I got home, the oil was BLACK and I could see chunks in the oil. Since then no problem. :d

I had the save problem off and on. It was almost time to change the oil, so before changing I added a half a can of seafoam to the crank case and did a 200 mile ride. After I got home I changed the oil, it came out BLACK with a few little oil chucks. Since then no problem. :d
