Like Kracker Jacks, a surprise inside

The two brush starter on my '84 Inter. was getting slow when hot so I decided to open it up and see.
I'm amazed that it turned the beast over at all! The brushes were within tolerance and the bushing and bearings OK but the field windings had come unsoldered from the terminal bolt and were arcing merrily away for some time by the look of it. Perhaps a P.O. had put a wrench to the outer terminal nut without holding the inner nut and spun the bolt? Anyway, I soldered them back on, lubed the gearcase, changed out the brushes, and commutator end bearing, cleaned up and twisted the brush plate ground contacts and re-assembled using dielectric grease on all the ground path contact points. New "O" rings and stuffed it back in the hole. I didn't know they could spin that fast! I would definitely check this point if I ever opened up a starter again.

Feetup, That sounds like the job I need to do. My '84 ASP starter drags badly when the engine is hot. If I can find the parts, I will do it.
