Top Speed 75 and LUGS at that.... (Informational)
Ok... so here's the issue.
84 GL1200a 40k on the odom.
Idles fine, rattles off 6000 rpms sitting still, no problem...
Then you ride it. On hills with throttle wide open goes from 75, 74, 73, 72, etc.......... Top speed with throttle wide open on flat surface about 75. All it wants to shell out under load is about 3700 RPM...
At 55 in OD the motor feels like it would rather be in 4th, kind of lugs along....

Solution:
Carburetor slide diaphragm. Bought them from Saber, whom by the way I ordered from on monday and had the slides on wed same week. All 4 had holes/tears in the diaphragms and needed replaced..

So feel like your bike should have a little more kick in the saddle... Check those carburetor slide diaphragms...

A question for us carb amateurs (maybe only me) - you can replace these by going in through the carb tops, right? All you have to do is remove the fairing lowers and carb tops to access them, right?

Just be sure to get the tops back on correctly... There is a little notch on the under side of tops... This needs to correspond to the small hole that is in the top edge of the diaphragms... Pretty self explanatory once you have a look at the underside of a top...

I had the exact issue you described andafter pulling the carbs off I found a main jet had unscrewed completely.
