Thank you for allowing us to join your great forum! My fiance's father passed away recently and we found his 1985 GL1200 Limited in the barn. It has been sitting for about 9 years and she wants to restore it back to new condition and tour around meeting other "Wingers'.
Thanks again! Brad and Andrea |

Hello and welcome Brad. You should be able to find lots of info here to help you get that Wing in great shape. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions no matter how simple.
How about some pics of that bike before you start on it then some more when it's fully operational.

Just purchased a 1985 Aspencade 85,000 kms. This is a great site and the information extremely helpful. I do my own work, but limited knowledge on this bike, look forward to many discussions. Presently making a list of things to check before riding season, such as charging system wires, are they soldered or?

Greetings - I'm a new member.
This afternoon I purchased an 1986 Aspencade for $400! It is a pretty decent bike considering it sat outside for a year. The guy had a new stator installed two years ago - last year the wires got hot so he hardwired them - and then it died on him and he parked it!! So, I'm going to play around with it and see if I can fire her up. I might need some advice. I currently ride a 2002 VTX 1800. I had an 84 Aspencade three years ago and then jumped to a 2000 Venture. My wife quit riding so I went to a cruiser. I love cycles and fooling with them. I live in Newton, Iowa and both my wife and I are ministers. I'm glad to be on board! Mark

Hello and welcome Mark. We are here to help if needed when you need advice or help on your new possesion. Two things come to mind when you say that it quit running, ignition switch or pulse generators. If you get no spark at the plugs those are the first places to look.

Thanks Vic for the welcome. I know the value of these forums not only in information but in friendships formed. I look foward to being a part of the group.
I just got the bike unloaded this afternoon and put in the garage. I haven't looked at it. The PO said that it lost its charge and he parked it. The stator is two years old - and the guy did a poor job of hard wiring the stator wires. I'll start there. I'll also pump out the gas and put fresh in - as well as check the other levels. It will be fun to fool with and as of now - I have little invested in it. I enjoy these kind of things. Thanks again! Mark

You might also want to consider pumping out all the old brake and clutch fluid and replace it with clean and fresh brake fluid.
Brake fluid is hygroscopice which means that it attracts moisture and moisture kills calipers and pistons and reduces braking performance because the moisture boils during a panic stop and cause the lever/pedal to bottom in a panic stop. Good luck and give a holler if we can help.

Greetings to all 1200'ers from da UP'er! I am the proud new owner of a 1985 GL1200 Ltd. Ed. I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I'm glad to have discovered this website for owners of 1200 Gold Wings, as I'm a mechanically challenged kinda guy.
I think I'll cruise the info highway on this website and check out the postings. |

Welcome aboard, UP'er. Always good to have another mechanically challenged member - that will make at least two of us! Actually, that's why this site is so good, the more experienced members are more than willing to share their knowledge and provide help. Don't be afraid to ask for any kind of help.

Welcome Up'er to the forum. Where abouts in Upper Michigan are you located? I know there are lots of nice roads up that way.
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Thanks for the welcome Keener and Tricky. I'll gladly listen and learn from experts on this website Keener.
I'm from the Houghton/Hancock area of the U.P. Tricky, better known as the Keweenaw Peninsula, beautiful biking area indeed! Right now my newly purchased Gold Wing is in the previous owner's garage in Wisconsin. When the weather improves I'll go down there and ride it to it's new home in da U.P., eh? I took it for a test ride a week ago while I was in Wisconsin. It's a nice ride with 34,000 miles on it. Hopefully, it'll go a few more miles. |
