85 Interstate Water pump rebuild
Has anybody experience that they can share on the actual rebuild of a water pump? I found oil in my coolant reservoir and inspection of the pump vanes reveals about 1/8th inch side to side play. Thats pretty conclusive evidence of the need to fix the water pump.

I have a Napa autoparts store near by and since I'm already doing a top end rebuild I inspected the gasket kit and luckily I have all the water pump gaskets and o rings that I need. There is also a bearing store nearby that many local Wing riders say can match anything.

I'd appreciate any info ... even if it is too risky to try. Only the experienced will know the facts.

Thanks in advance (TIA)

Billy;
It is questionable whether it is worth while rebuilding a water pump. I have heard that there are kits available to rebuild them, but I don't believe they contain the shaft, which is quite perishable on the gl1200. Consider a new pump element, and all advice I have heard would say consider OEM not aftermarket since the aftermarket pump element is made in India and of rather questionable quality. That being said there is at least one member of this forum who used an aftermarket pump and last I heard it worked. (There was an issue with the O ring seal but that was solved)

It would be better to purchase the complete Honda water pump.

The bearings are not a problem doing a rebuild, the seal could give you the problem.

Better get it new.

I pulled mine apart, the bearings were fine it was the seal that was leaking.

I didnt want to do it twice
The only stupid questions are the one's that are not asked.

Chuck,

Yes there is a post for this but the bottom line is you take off the cover and check for "play" if it has too much replace.

Does that mean that if there is no play that I am GTG? I have to do the seal behind the pump (apparently, oil in the water and leaking from weep hole.)

Nope.
Possibly the seal in the water pump has gone, bearings might be OK ......... new pump required.
