Fuel Filter For 1985 GL1200 LTD w/ CFI - BikerNewsman - 02-20-2012

While searching this site I found a series of posts from 2010 regarding fuel filters. One suggestion for my bike was a Wix #33556 Napa # 3556, however it appears this part is slightly oversized as compared to the original. A local parts house recommended I use an inline filter rather than the original type, suggesting an EMGO brand with part # 82-475 which retails for around $12. Has anyone used this type of filter, and other than appearance, is there a down-side to using this or a similar filter? :-\

This is a new bike to me so I'm not wanting to go with a factory replacement until I'm sure there's no problems with the fuel system, especially since when I took posession of the bike the tank was bone dry... absolutely no detectable moisture of any kind inside. Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated.

there is NO acceptable filter for the LTD/SEI other than the factory filter,no matter what any part house may tell you

the emgo 82-475 is an inline plastic filter capable of low pressure only, whereas the honda filter uses banjo style fittings

the wix #33556 filter is an acceptable replacement only if one can accept its larger physical size in an otherwise cramped enviroment

Thanks for the info neoracer. I appreciate the feedback. Guess it's time for a visit to the Honda dealer on the other side of the mountain.

i'd suggest you call the dealer 1st since a doubt they keep one in stock

I have seen some bad things about emgo fuel filters dissolving and gumming up your fuel system. Seems like the glue that holds the filter in place is breaking down and causing a mess. There have been posts on other sites with photos. You may want to check them out!! Hal

Thank you. I'll call the dealer first and will forget about any type of EMGO filter.

The Honda replacement filter I bought is slightly smaller in diameter than the original?
After replacing my tank, and getting my bike running last week, I'm going to leave the original on for 50-70 miles before replacing. (I ran 35 miles on Monday)
Not sure what i'm going to wrap around the filter to keep it snug in the holder so it does not rattle. I'll have to find some very thin rubber pieces I guess.

Philroy - I had that problem with a car's fuel filter. I went to an independent tire shop and asked for an old inner tube, cut a strip out of it the width of the filter bracket, then wrapped it one ply thick around the filter and cut off the excess. It worked like a charm. Cured the rattle, provided a snug fit, and was free. :d
