Air Filter Breather Hose Grommet - edbikerii - 11-23-2009

Hi Guys!

OK, I've got another question for all you fine folk. My breather hose elbow that fits into the top of the air cleaner fits very loosely. So loose that it pops out sometimes. I'm quite sure that there is air leaking around the elbow fitting into the air cleaner. I've looked at the parts fiche, and see the part #14 is in place on the air filter, but it doesn't hold the elbow fitting in place very well at all.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know if a new air filter comes with a new grommet? Part #14.

Are there any known problems with different years/elbows/filters/grommets that any of you good people are aware of?

Thank you,

Ed

I just looked at my old filter "I've got learn to throw things out" and it has no grommet so I must have reused the old one and that part seems to be no longer available.

Unless someone has a better suggestion I'd try to find something close at an auto parts dealer.

I picked up a selection of various sized grommets at our local auto discount house and used one of those. Works just fine.

I have seen after market filters that come with two holes and two different size grommets
They also come with two blank filler grommets.

The filter must fit several models so you use the grommet that fits your situation and use the blank to fill the hole you dont use

any idea which brand/model comes with grommets? I'll need a new filter soon anyway.

Keener, how did you come by this problem, seemingly the same as my own?

I've noted that the 1984 has different part numbers for both the grommet and the elbow than the 1985-1987 GL1200 Interstate. However, JCWhitney lists the same part number for their filter for 1984-1987. Hmmmmm....

So, I guess if the filter kit from JCWhitney comes with different grommets, then that will solve the problem. Anybody know what brand the JCWhitney unit is?

1984:
SKU: 17241-MG9-000
GROMMET, BREATHER TUBE (Honda Motorcycle Code 1524115) (NOT AVAILABLE)

1985:

Re: Air Filter Breather Hose Grommet - Keener - 11-24-2009

I came about it when I went to an aftermarket dry air filter (Mother Honda wants way too much for the stock tem) and noticed the holes were a bit different than stock. Anyway, there was a slght difference in size so I just used a different grommet for the pipe and then plugged the other hole with another plug.

Try a few turns of electrical tape around the elbo end to make a tighter connection.

It worked great for me!

I bought a filter from CycleMax Ohio and it came with a grommet with a hole in the center and a gromett with no hole, to be used as a plug. I cut the center out of the plug and used it to tighten the breather pipe up. It has been holding for about 4 months and 4000 miles with no problems.

Now why didn't I think of that? :d

I'm concluding that this is a common enough issue that I should not be concerned that some PO mangled my intake with a plumbing elbow from the hardware store.

I think I'll use the electrical tape until I replace the filter, then if it comes with the right grommet, great, I'll use the right one. If not, then I'll go to the parts store at that time and buy the right size.

Thank you all for your observations/experiences.
