Damping shims on front wheel - tgraham - 07-29-2009

Can anyone tell me how important the damping shims are on the front wheel. There is one between each of the front brake discs and the front wheel. It nothing more than some type of fiber/paper that isolates between the disc and wheel. I cant seem to find any replacements.
I dont think it would be too difficult to make one from scratch if I needed to, but are they really necessary?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I relize your question is two years old, but there are not many postings on this matter on any of the goldwing sites. I have just replaced my front wheel and bearing and then made my own damping shims. I used corel draw and my plotter to cut out new shims from gasket material I purchased from autozone, I hope it was worth the time.

i am sure that honda had a good reason, might even have been as simple as they didn't want the two surfaces to corrode together, considering its thickness i doubt there would be an dampening effect, especially since you torque the wheel hub and rotor together

When I first took off my front rotors, there was only one on one side and that came from Honda like that. when I put my new EBC rotors on I never bothered with them, I think it was more of a dis-similar metals to prevent corrosion

I wasn't sure how important these where so I made new ones from paper gasket material that any good auto store carries.
The originals appear to be just that, thick gasket material and the paper I bought was an exact replacement thickness as well as material.

+1 what tricky says; Two different metals in an open environment like our bikes live in may set up electrolysis. Honda was thinking ahead!
