How can one quiet the exhaust... - Guest - 07-18-2008

I used to ride a sportster and realize the whole LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES thing... however I want a quiet humm....what options do I have to shut up the stock exhaust some...... or is there aftermarket exhaust systems with a mellower tone?

I'm assuming you are referring to the exhaust note of your 'Wing. If so, the only way to achieve a quiet tone is to go with the stock exhaust/muffler system. Aftermarket systems such as MAC and Jardine are louder than stock - take it from one who's been there.

Huh?

The stock exhaust are very smooth sounding and pretty darn quiet as you travel down the road.

Guess is a matter of perception. True it is not a loud machine and perhaps some of it is the nature of the 4 cyclinder versus a 6 cylinder. But my father in laws 1500 is just so much quieter than this 1200... I'm sure it is an apples and oranges thing....

Do you have a picture of your exhaust? It sounds like you may have a aftermarket exhaust system.

If yours looks anything like this then it is NOT factory.

maybe the PO have removed the baffles of your mufflers.

I still have the stock system and it's pretty quiet but compared to the 1500 it's very loud. I have been thinking about having one of the local exhaust shops doing me a custom fabricated system with car mufflers. I really love the thing to be very quiet so I can enjoy the music and my wife's conversation.

and THAT is when all the years of drag pipes and rock and roll music REALLY pay off

Loud pipes do not save lives, the just tick everybody off....after all deaf people can drive cars, blind can not. Be SEEN not HEARD!!!

4 and 8 cylinder engines most often are louder than 6 cylinders due to the natural power pulses of the engines. I would suggest that you remove the baffles in your tailpipes by drilling out the rivets on the bottom and inspect them for severe rust issues. If they turn out to be in good shape then pack the baffles as thick as you can while still allowing them to fit back in place. Then on the outside with the fiberglass held tight with a small amount of electrical tape slide them back in. Once back in place the electrical tape will melt off the fiberglass and the fiberglass will act as a further sound deadener to the exhaust note but you will need to do this on a yearly basis because the fiberglass will slowly blow out in small pieces over time. It gives a slightly mellower exhaust sound.

I have stock exhaust on my 1200 and it is very quiet, I can hear my radio with no problems.

I've always thought the engine and exhaust sound on the gl1200 was/is very quiet but after riding the gl1500 and gl1800 I can see why someone would think the gl1200 is louder.. I find any bike with a fairing, quieter with a 3/4 helmut also instead of the full face one I always use now.
