Trunk Signal conversion ?? - BearOnt - 09-17-2007

I just bought a conversion kit to put signals on my trunk.
I got it all wired and tried it out and the signal is so dim its almost not noticeable. The running lights seem to be OK.
Inside the amber reflector there seems to be silver spray paint on the sides and not the back, this blocks almost all the light from the signal bulbs. Anyone else have experience with this?

Hey Bear,

I have the same aftermarket system. Mines pretty dim as well. The problem with mine is, that they use a festoon style bulb for the turn signals and they're only 15W. Just not bright enough when compared to the lower turn signals. I'm considering changing to all LED's from "LED Nights" which I hope will help some. I have even considered wiring the running light and the turn circuits together to help increase the light output. If I could find a 30W festoon it just might do the trick, in the interim. No luck so far with sourcing those bad boys out though.

Cheers,
FTO

I should be able to come up with some High power festoon LEDs for these

You can see the silver paint on the inside of the lens, it almost completely obscures the light coming from the signal.

I used some of my nail polish remover  And took the paint off and it came out like this

Now the signal is much more visible. I have to try it at night yet but so far it seems much better.
Not sure what I can use on my nails now

Hey, taking the silver paint off is a great idea. Thanks!

Is this conversion just the bulbs and bulb holders?

The original lens is painted silver to act as a reflector.

The kit I got many years ago included the lens but it wasnt painted silver.

The kit I got has amber lens, bubs with an aluminum mount that screws right in, with wiring.
Similar to this link.

I thought that maybe it was to help in reflecting also but it didnt work too well.

I have the same turn signal kit as BearOnt and I have also wanted to go all LED's on my signals and this kit, I have replaced my Brake lights with LED's but not my signal's or front running lights. I am ready to buy the LED's if someone could help me figure out which ones to get and where to buy them. Thank You and Take Care - Jim

UPDATE...
I just found this Post with the same turn signal kit that I have. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://gl1200goldwings.com/viewtopic.php?t=1321">http://gl1200goldwings.com/viewtopic.php?t=1321</a><!-- m -->
Has anyone crossed reference these bulbs to LED's yet ? I also need the two little bulbs along side of the Headlight and the front amber run-turn bulbs with an electronic flasher unit. And that would complete my conversion. Thanks - Jim

Yes, I have them, on my first try they looked like a nuclear explosion when they flashed, just too bright.

I have some new lower MCD LEDs coming that should do just fine.

Thank You fysty-1, I received your PM.

I opened up my tail light today and noticed that the little bulb in which I believe is a #57 bulb's are melting the plastic near them, I really would like to convert these to LED's.

I also got the lights on the side of the trunk but I got the brake light and running light instead and works great. Your brakes show up much better but I too will change all these out with Jim for LED'S. Also got the refector under the tag with lights to replace the standard refector and again will put LED'S from Jim when he gets all these in.

The top picture looks like it is a red lens yet the lower picture looks amber?
comparing it with the red of the rest of the light bar
or is it my imagination?

- Seniorwing - 10-22-2007

Also if you notice, the top picture the plastic looks to be white and in the bottome picture it looks to be gray. It might be the pictures just showing up different. But the wires do look the same color???
